my power runs about 400 a year, yes it is cheap because i live in the poorest county in my state, if i invested 15k in a full solar system it would take 37 and a half years to break even, not counting battery replacement and maintenance. I dropped out of school in the seventh grade and solar is easy to figure out, do not waste your money. wait for solar prices to drop dramatically. When you hear "no out of pocket", close the door. I think things can get a lot hairier than you have described Jon and it can get to the point where you can't sell your home depending on the deal you have signed. The company that knocked on my door would not explain the basis of the deal and wanted a 2nd level sales person to come to my home with my wife present. When a company is being "mysterious" about the arrangement, it's time to cut bait. When a company is only offering leases and not providing the option to buy, I get suspicious. If I take the example of a neighbor, he seems to have leased because he was very reticent to tell me what he had paid for the panels and he has a huge tree shading his main array of 20 panels. His total panel count is 26. I am getting a Tesla system ( cash bought ) with 48 panels that is estimated to cover 120% of my annual energy needs. His home and mine are identical so I would estimate that his system is massively undersized no matter the performance of the specific panels. A company that leases has no interest in right sizing your system or making it perform well for you. It is going to perform well for them whether the sun shines or not. The right size for them is the biggest payment you are willing to take on, not the size that matches your consumption.
