I know this was released in 1963, and that it figured in an episode of Mad Man set in 1960. I thought of this as the Big Band Era's final, last gasp, and understood that this song was released at the beginning of 1964. This has a feel of something right on the tippy, tippy edge before the British Invasion. Very fascinating instrumental!!!

Funny thing about songs like this: when your 20 you can't really appreciate the music; but after you reach a certain vintage you realize how incredible they are !

Girl: “I love this place - there’s so many men here!”
Sal Romano: (salivating) “I know!”

Just visited the restored 1962 TWA terminal at JFK airport. This recording is one of the many Mad Men-Rat Pack tunes they play over the sound system!

I feel so pure and undiluted that I know this music from having good taste and not from watching the idiot box, which I don't even turn on or have cable. Thank you.

Don’t know anything about Mad Men and don’t particularly want to I’m just here because I’ve discovered this amazing tune.

I tend to hear this song and just picture drinking and being depressed. Maybe the way Mad Men portrayed the scene with Pete’s embarrassing moment, but I still find this song to be sad in a way.

I always thought this song was very sensual and I liked the album cover with the beautiful woman on it.

Has anyone noticed that there seem to be two completely different versions of the shangri-la album? This title track, from the “original” version with mainly harps as you’d expect. And then another version with flute, sax, keyboard and completely different melodies.. in Spotify the even took this album version down and replaced it with the other one. Some sleuth must know the reason behind this??..😅

Reminds me of, "The Brain that Wouldn't Die, " episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 when similar style music was playing, and one of the robots was riffing, "It's a sleazy morning out there. You're listening to K-PORN, Holmes and Reems in the morning… sleazy, slutty music all morning long. Here's one from Skinny and the Sweat Beads."
