Hello it’s me again, Gary the English teacher. Today we are going to look at the CEFR. This is short for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages . The CEFR is a comprehensive and detailed set of *benchmarks* that define language level in the four skills: speaking, writing, reading and listening. There are six levels from A1 to C2, with B2 representing basic fluency. Language courses and books are usually designed for a particular level. Examinations and other assessment systems are usually designed to assess your competency at a certain level.
One major language school in England publishes a guide to the levels. The guide for B2 is 14 pages long! It’s impossible for courses and assessment systems to cover all of it, so any assessment of your level will only provide a rough indication, and the reality is you could be B2 in listening but B1 in speaking, with a grammar competency of A2. Most assessment systems will say you’re in the middle: B1, so if the job you want involves a lot of listening, for example Sales or Customer Service, your level could be underestimated. In this case, I would advise you to seek a separate assessment of your listening ability.
I hope that helps. Thank you for watching and I’ll see you again soon. Bye for now.

a *benchmark* is standard or point of reference people can use to meaure something else.
Apple set a benchmark for mobile phone manufacturers when they launched the iPhone.
We have to analyse our rivals’ competitiveness in order to set a benchmark for us to work towards.
