John Hogan: Motor Sport magazine podcast

John Hogan was the man who oversaw Marlboro's involvement with Formula 1 for 30 years, from McLaren to Ferrari, James Hunt to Ayrton Senna, and counts both Ron Dennis and Bernie Ecclestone as friends.

So we joined him at CSM, where he still acts as consultant to look back.

Plus, he explains why McLaren didn't sign Gilles Villeneuve, why McLaren picked Hunt over Jacky Ickx, how Dennis took control – and then lost Marlboro backing, and much, much more.

Hi Motor Sport, I love these podcasts but can I offer a suggestion? Some of your listeners will know who John Hogan and even CSM are but some won't. You could do a little introduction so we have some background.
I've been a dedicated listener to previous podcasts and often cringe because the questions assume a huge amount of knowledge and would really only make sense to those of us who already know the story. I'm sure it's not easy but it would be great if you could provide background and context throughout the conversation.

Nonsense about choosing Hunt or Ickx as the only availables in late 1975.
Peterson could be persuaded to leave Lotus whose 72 had lost its primacy.
What Hogan is keeping to himself is the fact that Fittipaldi was on about $250, 000 from Texaco and Marlboro.
Peterson would cost no less and would need his overalls in Polar Caravans colours, not Marlboro red.
And he wasn't showy in public, didn't smoke, drank little or nothing, had a "boring" lifestyle with a wife and child in an English village and only did TV interviews in Sweden.
Hunt was close to unemployable in F1 then due to all other drives being filled or interpersonal hostilities with team owners. He would drive for as little as $50, 000 plus the prize money he was likely to get in a competitive M23. He smoked publicly (Rothmans stuffed into a Marlboro box) and attracted a lot of TV attention.
Hogan got a brave driver on a low salary and high performance related commission.
