Boxing vs Wrestling - Who Would Win: Best Fighting Styles and Self-Defense Techniques

As someone who grew up with a background in boxing and kickboxing, I've always been drawn
to the striking arts. However, when it comes to the age-old question of who would win in a fight
between a boxer and a wrestler, I have to admit that the wrestler usually has the upper hand.
Let me explain why. While fights typically start on the feet, where boxers excel, statistics show
that about 97% of fights eventually end up on the ground. This is where the wrestler's
advantage comes into play. Unlike the boxer who wants to keep the fight standing, the wrestler
is skilled in taking the fight to the ground from the very beginning. This gives the wrestler a
significant edge in terms of strategy and control.
Another advantage for the wrestler is the ability to close the distance. When a wrestler engages
with a boxer, they can quickly penetrate the punching range and get into close quarters. If the
boxer fails to land a significant strike during this transition, the wrestler can easily take the fight
to the ground, negating the boxer's striking advantage.
While there are instances where a well-timed strike can catch a wrestler off guard, it's
important to note that such opportunities are rare at the highest level of competition. Even in
mixed martial arts (MMA), where fighters have a broader skill set, it's uncommon for strikers to
successfully defend against a wrestler's takedown attempts.
In terms of self-defense and street fighting, a combination of wrestling and boxing is often
considered one of the best approaches. Since most altercations start on the feet and may end
up on the ground, having a strong foundation in both disciplines provides a well-rounded skill
set. Wrestlers can dictate whether the fight goes to the ground or not, while boxers can
effectively strike and defend themselves in stand-up exchanges.
It's important to remember that in a hypothetical matchup between two highly skilled
practitioners, the wrestler tends to come out on top around 95% of the time. However,
individual skill levels and other factors can influence the outcome. Nevertheless, the

combination of wrestling and boxing remains a popular choice for those seeking effective self-
defense techniques in real-world situations.
In conclusion, while boxing and wrestling offer distinct fighting styles, the wrestler often holds
the advantage due to their proficiency in taking the fight to the ground and controlling the
outcome. Combining wrestling and boxing can provide a well-rounded skill set for self-defense
and street fighting scenarios. Ultimately, it's crucial to train in a variety of martial arts and self-
defense techniques to be prepared for different situations and opponents.

Every person is different. Many people have never been punched in the face.

I'm a life-long (25 years) mixed-martial artist (Kyokushin, Grappling/Wrestling, and Judo), I agree with him 100%. Even though I can fight with an elite striker, once I get a single/double leg takedown, he is mine to finish. Most strikers don't know how to defend or evade once they are tackled/grabbed.

It all depends....MMA fight, Wrestlers win most of the time....Street fight, I would say all boils down to the fighter.

When You See Someone With Broken Ears and Nose Don't Fight with Him

I find boxers abit delusional. They seem to think because they can box they can win any fight. I've proven time and time again that a wrestler with submission experience will totally dominate and submit a boxer within 30 seconds. Also a full suplex onto a concrete floor would be a life changing experience for a boxer.

True. But I will add this is only if they know each other and what the other is capable of. If the wrestler does not know the guy is a boxer, he could be in trouble. And a lot of boxers don’t look physically opposing… Case in point: Andre Ward…. Tyrone Woodley could dump Ward on his head. But what if Woodley did know Ward and that he was world champ and gold medalist in the Olympics for boxing?? He would come forward and swing on him… Woodley said years ago he wanted box Ward. Long before the Paul fight.. lol

have you ever seen someone who has no experience getting taken off their feet react? They are extremely uncomfortable and ALL of their technique is GONE.

At 45, Jack Dempsey fought a pro wrestler named Cowboy something or other. Jack played with him for while, then put him down.

I had 1 world champion and one british and commonwealth champion at the gym i trained at when i was younger. I have been in sparring with both and i can categorically say that an untrained boxer will not lay a hand on them, never mind grab them two handed around the waist. They were like whackamole. They would have hit you 3 times and left their position before you had even thought about lunging for their legs.

In UFC stats middle weight and up KO and TKO is the winner. Middle weight and down submission is the winner. Not me saying it check the stats at the end of the day pretty close not much difference. Rules play a big part. And matching up fighters. Not sure on PRIDE stats. Sambo champion and one of best ever Fedor won by KO and TKO mostly. Chuck Liddell KO mostly. Rumble Johnson KO mostly

I would agree with most of what you say here besides the best combo would be wrestling + kickboxing or muay thai. Boxing is good but a limited striking art compared to kick boxing or muay thai.

I talked to my state champ wrestling buddy Kenny a few months back, and he admitted I'd beat him. Wrestlers lean forward though, and that's a no in fighting. It's an easy target to get knocked out

Buh my question is if he is closing the distance why not shoot a jab while stepping back or why not feint to keep him thinking it makes no sense to go for a big shot and second if he gets under u immediately throw elbows in the back of his head instead of punching personally I think it’s all on experience size and iq a lightweight wrestling isn’t going to take a heavyweight down as easily just like a lightweight boxer would not beat a heavyweight wrestler and another thing what are you punching for if you know he is getting close jab his eyes take his vision away second take his breath away third take his mobility if ur a mma guy or Thai guy 💯

Only time a boxer wins is if the wrestler is caught off guard, a hook to the chin puts them out . Wrestlers will win 8/10 times tho .
