We'll show you a cool smart home device that checks your Internet connection periodically, and if it goes down for a set length of time, it automatically power cycles your modem and router.

Awesome. I am looking for such device since two years, because all other home smart devices depends on home wifi, and 99 percentage of routers problems are resolved by simple on and off.
I hope may be in future all router manufacturers will implement this in their device by default. but you are the real inventor.

Most relays could still do the 120v coming out of your wall. You would have to cut some wires and solder however.

I set a timer from the harware store to power cycle my moden at 3 Am every day, and never had troubles whit the interner again

The problem with this approach is that it doesn't reduce the incident rate to make it less likely to happen in middle of work day as just happened to me leading me to search for solutions. I think this is necessary but better to be used IN CONJUNCTION with automated scheduled restarts.
