How to prune wisteria for maximum blossom

How to #prune a #wisteria. Both winter and summer pruning for maximum #blossom

In this video I give an overview of the #pruning regime for the wisteria in order to maximise the blossom.

I also provide some useful hints and tips for maintenance.

Be patient, the wisteria can take a few seasons to come into #flower but it's worth the wait. Eventually you will be rewarded with a cascading waterfall of beautiful #nectar filled #blooms which provide a food source for #polinating insects, look amazing and have a beautiful scent.

Prune the wisteria twice a year. The first time prune it back to five #leaf sets, do this approximately one month after the blossom has disappeared and it has produced many #leafy #tendrils. Then in the late winter or very early spring prune the same branches back to two #buds which will encourage many #flowering #spurs.

Make sure you keep a control of the size and scope of your plant because it can become leggy and take over, it is quite invasive when it gets going.

The best explanation of pruning Wisteria I have ever heard. I now have high hopes that mine will actually flower next year, just off to prune it now. Thank you!

Thank you. Ours is 40 years old and it’s a bear to prune! Never knew I should prune twice a year. Thank you for the detailed information. We are in Fall in Southern California, so we don’t get snow. But I think I’m safe to prune down to 5 leaves for now.

I have wisteria growing in my walled garden, it’s a huge established plant that has obviously been here for years and years. I’ve never had one before so this video was so so helpful. Thank you Mark!

Wow I'm Thank you for such an informative and friendly video.... Actually the best information I've heard so far and I've had my Wisteria for 4/5 years now, East Coast, South Africa, and wondering why no flowers yet but now I understand the plant so much better.... All I knew was that it is a vigorous grower(obviously in the right climate) as my Nursery man wanted to know why I want a plant that doesn't normally flourish here
I'm renting so put it in a tall pot which keeps falling over!!

Thank you so much for this presentation. I am living in North America and love to grow Wisteria. Looking for such presentation. This year I have double bloom. Once in May and end of July. My vines are only four years old. I was not sure when to prune, but your advice is very helpful and timely. Love to enjoy the beautiful Wisteria!

My grandfather planted a wisteria in his garden in 1963. It yet lives and has become a large and heavy plant, too heavy for the structure it sits on. A couple years without maintenance after my grandparents passed have also made it complicated too prune, the tendrils have wrapped around eachother and become a nest of thick branches. But even then (and to this day) it does produces a glorious waterfall of blooms.

Thank you, Mark. I'm going to prune my wisteria for the first time tomorrow (1st August). I planted it in early 2021 and it has not blossomed yet. I'm hoping that, following your advice, I'll see some flowers next spring.

Many thanks for the insights from a "Yank" in Northern New York, growing a flourishing, but so far non-flowering, wisteria at the Northern edge of its range.

This is my first time having Wisteria. She's about 10-15 years old but I only moved in last year. I pruned her WAAAAY back, down to sticks in January 2021 and she did bloom a bit, but not a lot.... then she got really bushy and green (she's on an arbor trellis, lovely) but I didn't know to prune back in August or after the bloom until I watched your video! So her leaves all fell off in January and just now got around to pruning. But what I read last year was to cut waaaay back to the woody sticks... and I did that once again. There were pods or what looked like blooms but I cut all that back ... as I didn't prune in August. I will have to set up a reminder to prune back after blooming this year (hopefully, I didn't cut that short and won't have any blooms!- think maybe that happened last year - pruned to much in Winter ... and this year pruning on first day of Spring where there 'WERE' buds .... Ahhh ... well, live and learn. Thanks so much for your video, very helpful!! Will prune twice this upcoming year, and not back to the hard wood, lol!! :)

"knowing how a wisteria/glycine behaves..." SO TRUE because(ours we planted over 20 years ago here at our old farm in Normandy, ) they're really ALIVE, almost like an animal. I've let it grow for too long and now just have huge gobs I have to trim back 3-4 times each summer. Stopped you at 9mins but I will be GLUED TO THIS INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO....cheers...rr Nromandy, Fra.
