They walk the prop thru because a radial engines bottom cylinders collect oil and that oil needs to be removed before starting.

The rubber bands were the largest ever made. Took 60 hours to wind but could fly for 175 miles. Impressive. 👍

I'm feeling bad for the one fella he seems to keep getting the top of a compression stroke at the beginning of his walk through the propeller. Either that's bad luck or excellent timing on the other fellow's part

You start an 80 year old plane the same way they used to start a brand new plane 80 years ago.

I thought I recognized the plane, then I saw the location and the patch on the side. It’s the D-Day Doll! Seen it flying over my house whenever there’s an air show at the Riverside Airport KRAL. It’s housed there.

They're gonna have to spin them a lot faster to get that thing in the air

10 more spins and the elastic band is twisted enough. 😂

Dad worked on DC-3/C-47 before entering the navy in 1942. He worked at McDonnell Douglas Aerospace in Santa Monica till his death in 1981.

Felicitaciones. Mí padre voló en el DC3, y siempre comentó lo noble que fue. Saludos desde Argentina.

If the plane with radial engines sits longer than half hour, you check for hydraulic lock in the lower cylinders as the men in this video are doing. It pumps out the oil, if significant oil is found in lower cylinders you remove a spark plug to implement drainage. Theres also an improved cylinder with deeper cylinder skirts that don’t allow oil to drain in the cylinder. Have great day

My Dad was the crew chief on the ol C47. Over the Pacific on a run they lost both engines. The pilot did a smooth ocean landing to keep the plane in one piece. The whole crew floated in the sea for 3 days before they were spotted floating in a rubber raft. lt was one in a million, they were found. They were spotted by another plane and picked up later that day. Or, you would not be reading this message from me😮😮😮😮😮🙏🙏🙏

Greatest civilian plane ever come out of the USA the DC3/C47

Partially correct. The oil collects in the bottom cylinders and if not removed, as liquids are non-compressible, run the risk of breaking the crankshaft and/or a piston rod on start-up. The other thing that happens is as you are pulling the props through, you are also lubricating the cylinder walls and preventing what is called "a dry start" (which was hard on the piston rings) and showed that the oil was flowing. The air crews and ground crews looked for huge puff of smoke that indicated the oil was flowing

I worked in Alaska go and when I was coming home the regular plane Was down for service so I had to ride from Homer Alaska to Anchorage on A DC3 touring plane 1937 restored it. Another thrill of a lifetime

Amazing aircraft, C47 sky-train definitely earned it's place in American War history, still around 400 flying today, awesome Aircraft 👌

I worked on these in VT while in highschool, the company had 5 of these, 2 flew, 3 for parts, they also had cowle covers, big red circular pieces of wood with oversized chopsticks that would go over the engine compartment but behind the prop, it would scissor to fit around the prop shaft, helping keep heat in around the engine compartment in the winter while running salamander heaters with stove pipe ducting into the engine compartment. After about an hour of warm up, then we had a battery cart to help do what these men are doing, and then I had the honor of unplugging said battery cart and pulling it out and behind the wing while the engine was running in the winter in VT, it was cold, in the summer it wasn't so bad, but winters,
120W oil, ya, it's thicker than a line at Dunkin during national donut day.😮

hey, aerospace engineer here. the reason for them spinning the prop by hand is to wind up the propeller, as this is an older plane which has no engine and works like a wind-up toy.
