Measuring with a Micrometer

Measuring with a micrometer is a little harder than using calipers, but it’s still pretty easy once you understand. You have to look at the larger number first which is 0.5” and see how many marks last 0.5” the edge is located. Each tick mark represents 0.025”. This example is 3 full marks past 0.5” which means the first number is 0.575”. Now you take the next number on the right and add the closest number without going over which in this case is 0.011”. This makes the measurement 0.586”. Micrometers are inherently more accurate than calipers.
