Can’t believe it’s your first raku!! Hope you had a great time, I think raku days are some of the BEST community experiences in ceramics

Raku is so neat. The lack of atmospheric oxygen in the second part of the firing produces extremely hot carbon monoxide. The CO wants to react so much that it literally rips the oxygen from the metal oxides in the glaze to form CO2, which is why the glazes can come out metallic looking.

I adore raku. My dad's community ceramic studio was on a little farm with animals so on raku days there were always a few burnished pieces which were fired like the other glazed pots, but instead of going into the burn cans to carbon up, they'd drape a few strands of horse hair or chicken feathers onto the glowing pot. The hair leaves squiggly carbon lines that look like lightning or streams on a map, and the feathers leave a smudgy smokey feather shape. It was always my favorite part to watch!

“A cool looking lizard “

That line really made me chuckle 🤭 😂

It looks stressful, but the finished product is beautiful

I've seen so many different ways to do raku. Burying it in a pit, trash can, pizza oven thing. None of them come out the same, and it has such fine differences. Very cool!

My brother is a ceramics major in college and his specialty is raku!! It's always so fun to see what cool things he does to his pieces!!

I love raku days!!! And I’m sure you’re already aware, but friendly reminder that raku fired ceramics are NOT food grade safe!! But I’m glad you had fun and the results are beautiful!

Thank you for bringing ceramics and the various firing methods into the common space of the internet. My mom is a ceramic artist and I’ve been helping her since I was little and it always feels special to me when I see other creators/educators showing off one of the oldest art forms!

Weird tip for raku: wet your eyebrows before removing the pots. Dont ask me how i learned that 😂

I just did my first raku firing a week ago and I’m about to do my second Wednesday. I absolutely love the process.

So the way I've done raku firing was on unglazed ceramics, we loaded an old bin with stick and herbs and other natural bits, popped our pieces in and left them in there until the fire died down, fired them normally and then burnished the pieces. It gave such beautiful burn marks and intresting patterns, I love doing this. Raku is just such a versatile firing technique, so many ways to make something amazing

I really love the look this technique gives! But the process looks INSANE. I’m glad you had an audience and help😩.

We did raku in my college ceramics class and I IT! The 100% unique colors/textures you get on every piece are always stunning and you get a bit of an adrenaline rush handling a red-hot pot and then setting something on fire with it.

Raku is one of my favorite ways of firing. No pot is ever like another. Two pots can be same size, same glaze, and side by side in the kiln, and they'll be totally different. It's an exciting way to fire.
