My brother once went to Belfast. They asked him if he was Catholic or Protestant. he said he was Jewish. They then asked if he was a Protestant Jew or a Catholic Jew

My dad has an interesting story of his encounter with the UDA.

My dad ( Catholic from the Republic ) used to deliver show cars to car shows or dealerships from Dublin port to around Ireland ( North and South. ) While delivering a new Audi V8 around 1990 to Derry/Londonderry. Shortly after he crossed the border my dad encountered an armed UDA checkpoint in a narrow lane. My Dad couldn't go up. They would see hes Catholic and from the Republic if he pulled so my Dad had the option of trying to J turn the car around and drive back or floor the Audi through the checkpoint and duck to avoid any fire from the UDA. My dad decided to turn the car around and floor it, preparing to be shot. The speed of that Audi got him out of there unscathed and thankfully no shots were fired. My Dad lives to tell the story thankfully.

It's so sad hearing about the violence in Ireland in shockingly recent history. I have no familial connections to Ireland, but I went there on vacation (from the USA) and almost everybody I met both in Dublin and Belfast were very friendly and helpful. I can't imagine such a lovely group being subjected to such horrors. I wish I had had enough time to go out and see the countryside, maybe next time...

Thanks for this. I'd never heard of any of the Protestant forces until I moved to Ireland. Granted, I was 18 when the good Friday agreement was signed, so pretty young during the Troubles but all I ever remember hearing about was the IRA. It's nice to have the British equivalent profiled!

Mostly Scots* not England and Scotland. People keep overlooking this (I think from a place of wanting to always blame the English) - it was mostly Scottish Presbyterian settlers - who became Ulster Scots.

I remember Graham Norton telling the story of when he was child visiting relative's in Northern Ireland, because their car had Republic number plates they had to park the car in a Catholic area and walk to the families house in the protestant area, as they were walking he would ask his father things but was told to be quiet as people would recognise his southern accent.

I'd love to see you do a video on their 'sister' organisation the UVF, personally I've always found them the more interesting of the two, largely owing to their secrecy, small size, and their technical capabilities when compared with the UDA.
