The Sun has technically already set when you see the bottom touch the horizon, not the top, due to atmospheric refraction.

I am probably older than your parents, but this is the first time I've heard that term. I always like learning new things about science and so forth, but this sounds like it has been pulled out of a hat just a few hours before I even saw this.

Besides the diameter of the sun and earth, there’s other factors such as atmospheric lending and possibly progression in the orbit of wart around the sun that change the perceived length of day. Without an atmosphere, you would see the sun rise later and set sooner, but you see it lenses through the atmosphere before it is actually risen above the horizon and after it has actually set beyond the horizon.

Got to watch the sunset on the equinox from a very tall building with a street grid aligned to the cardinal directions below me and it kicked so much ass when the sun set perfectly at the westernmost point of the horizon
