Nestled on the outskirts of Kochi, Alarine unfolds the story of Ar Zarine Jamshedji and her husband, Alan, in their unique haven. This tranquil abode, not too distant from the city bustle, immerses itself in peace, surrounded by lush green paddy fields and cradled by rubber and nutmeg plantations.

Crafted in a swift six months, the house stands as a testament to innovation, utilizing Stereogram’s cutting-edge Schnell 3D Panel construction system. Its allure lies in a blend of structural prowess, top-tier insulation, rapid construction, and a seamless fusion of prefab and in-situ elements.

Approaching Alarine is akin to discovering a hidden gem. The transparent structure defies conventional expectations, revealing only vetiver-covered rooftops and the expansive paddy fields. Perched on a flat terrain of a plot with dramatic contours, the house invites exploration via meandering stairs etched into the steep landscape. A formal doorway is absent, inviting guests directly into a space where indoors and outdoors entwine beautifully.

Schnell panels, laterite mud plaster, and a verdant vetiver canopy atop the roof emerge as standout features. Through her ingenious design, the architect prompts a reevaluation of our housing norms, encouraging a future where sustainability transcends choice and becomes a way of life.

Respect for the lady when she said "we didn't want to block the view of the neighbour behind who also bought the property to enjoy the view in the front".

The mosquitoes, lizards and snakes make it hard to live in such a place. It all looks veey romantic in a video. But life will be hard.

hey zarine please dont stop doing what you are doing. It was one of the greatest example how can architecture make you feel certain way. I felt the peace of that house through video. Amazing!!

I never thought I’d ever say these words but Zarine, Nicely done. I came across a collection of photos of this house elsewhere and what really caught my eye at the time being a Hi-Fi Audiophile Enthusiast were the Rethm Speakers from Ar.Jacob George. Never had I realised you’d done your home there. I’m really feeling happy and fulfilled knowing that there still exists Architects who actually live up to the real purpose of their mastery.

Loved the earthy red plaster on top, the solar panels built in, and the grass on top. Truly blends in.

House looks good. But during night, insects and reptiles will come in as uninvited guests...And rain water in rainy season due to low lying areas

Eventhough she insists it's not the aesthetics/uniqueness she is rooting for, i kinda feel too much emphasis was put into it that hinders the practicality of living there day in and day out against the forces of nature. But I'm sure they have contingencies put in place considering how experienced they are. It should've been covered in the video for us commoners to put things into perspective.

Hiya Zarine....

Somehow the video, the house, and your concept, connected with me.

Been thinking on the subject for quite a while, but wasn't able to find a way forward. Your video gives me something more to think about.

Thanks much.

As an architect living in Kerala, I would love to see more houses like this, but it's practically impossible for a normal family to live and maintain it. If this is a holiday home, which means it would be closed up for a major part of the year, then I guess it would work. But for a normal family with normal everyday problems, this would raise a lot of concerns. Apart from practicality, this is an amazing architectural experimentation, something we don't often strive for.

The house exudes a striking simplicity and elegance. However, I have a few reservations regarding potential issues with mosquitos and rain, as the house is situated below ground level in a damp area. The proximity of the swimming pool to the bedroom is undoubtedly aesthetically pleasing, but it may seem awkward to have it placed so close without any separation in between but just an edge.

Very very happy to see your house what I was thinking about. But I am stuck by usual urban practices, vastu and other beliefs. I am struggling with those construction workers everyday for having little greenary into and around my home. Your video will surely help me to justify my vision. It encourages me to take bold decisions to make my concrete walls into green walls. Thank u for sharing your home.
