The role of countries in bridging the climate and circularity gap
How circular economy solutions can help mitigate climate change

Today, the global economy is only 8.6% circular — just two years ago it was 9.1%. The global circularity gap is widening and the trend is negative. Covid-19 held a magnifying glass to the global economy’s flaws—flaws that have long been clear, but that society continued to press the snooze button on. For the first time ever, the amount of material consumed by our global economy also surpassed 100 billion tonnes, of which only 8.6% is being cycled back into the economy—a sobering indicator of the progress we have yet to make.

So how do we shift back into gear and ensure that our systems satisfy citizens' societal needs while at the same time staying within the ecological limits of our planet?

Countries can be critical facilitators of this change towards a circular economy. An initial cohort of countries has kickstarted their circular agendas as early as 10 years ago, ranging from individual nation-states in Europe to the giant economy of China. Since then, recent years have witnessed a steady stream of new players adopting circular economy policies and Roadmaps.

But changing your entire system, that is interconnected, complex and ever-changing is a daunting task. More and more countries understand the need and the power of this change but find it hard to start.

In this webinar, we will address:
The importance of the circular economy and its power to address global challenges like climate change and economic resilience.
Measuring the circular economy: The Global Circularity indicator on the global and national level
The role of individual countries and where they should start on their journey to circularity
You will hear from the world’s first countries that have executed a national Circularity Gap Report, what it brought them, the challenges they faced and the next steps.
