"Along Comes Mary" is a song composed by Tandyn Almer, originally recorded in 1966 by American sunshine pop band the Association. It was the group's first hit, released on their debut album, And Then... Along Comes the Association (1966).
"Along Comes Mary" is sung from the point of view of a once-disillusioned young man talking about the "tribulations no one ever sees" and who "curse[s] those faults in me." The singer believes Mary gives him comfort and improves his life. Both Leonard Bernstein and Tandyn Almer stated that Mary was a reference to marijuana; this association was also prevalent among many of the song's listeners. In the Young People's Concert titled What Is a Mode? Leonard Bernstein explained that the song was composed in the Dorian mode.

Is this the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival opener? Fantastic syncing: those handclaps really hit!

The Association were so great musically and vocally: it's so sad they couldn't shed their "square" image.

Question I've asked about this song before. The vocal fills at 1:00 and 1:44 sound like actual words on the original 60s version. Here they just sound like syllables but the tag of the second one still sounds like it might be actual words. No lyric search ever turns up so much as an acknowledgment that something is being sung.

Mary was a thinly veiled reference to marijuana.
