Looks really coo. Nice and inventive. I'd grind that mouth of the vice. Both from the inside, and into a pin-grab - from the outside. That'll make grabbing smaller flies easier.

Headed to Harbor Freight tomorrow. As you were talking about down sizing the unit, I thought why not build both. Bigger one for doing bigger spinner baits and Rooster tails . And the small one for doing ice flies and smaller jigs. Thanks Geoffrey.

Based on your vise, it gave me an idea of a way to make one. Mine was using lawnmower axle bearing, too. Also I made an actual iron jaws and analuminum adaptor for the jaws.... But your use of the lawnmower bearings is what got me thinking I could design a rotary vise. Thanks! Great idea. Wish I could send a photo.

Very creative!! As you mentioned along with Mark below, making 2 versions seems practical.Using 3/8 size hardware and fittings for smaller hook applications.

Nice design! These things go for around $400 for a good one. Well done!

This is a nice application.... Just wondering if the price of the pipe and other hardware include the vice grips wouldn't be more expensive than a hook vice.... I've seen on Amazon some that came with the lure tools, was about $38. I know this vice is obviously sturdy.
Edit: today I stopped at big box store and sorta got an idea of pipe prices.. if I got black pipe it's a little cheaper.. I already have the smaller vice grips and it's a needle nose. It would be less bulky at the hook. The only thing I didn't price was the rotating part. Any bearing is at least $6, so I was thinking of a .nylon bushing to fit the PVC T piece .... I've seen vices as low as $10.99, not a rotation type, just a straight angled up stubby vice tip....I'm not even experienced to know how that would affect a beginner like me....harder to use or not?

if you already had alla these parts, like say a plumber by trade maybe, this is an extremely viable design and ultra low cost in that case; under $50 seems a decent buy. i have not priced these tools but i bet they aint $50 to get the jaws that align the shank with the rotational axis, that's brilliant.

Would be real nice if you could make us up a list of parts. Every time I’m trying to write the parts down, I’m trying to watch also.I get behind and get lost. I guess I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer!

Was you inspired by the famous Russian tank T34 ?
