Five Nights at Freddy's is an indie video game series and media franchise created by Scott Cawthon, later adapted by Steel Wool Studios and Illumix. Scott Cawthon himself also said MatPat was correct about the 1983 VS 1987 stuff and a less known fact is that the "87" in the source code was actually changed to an "83" only a few days before release :)

Imagine when we finally get to see the bite of 87 mark is like "WAS THAT THE BITE OF 83?"

A key difference was that the subject of the bite of 87 lived, as stated by phone guy

Also another little tidbit is that phone guy says that the bite 87 took out the frontal lobe and the victim survived. The crying child however did not survive and fredbear crushed the whole skull.

My theory is that the mangle is the one who caused the bite of 87, either a child, or the security guard

I used to think that the 1983 on Fredbear & Friends was just the copyright date and not when it aired (still think it makes more sense) but Fredbear's still had to shut down before FNAF 2.

Phone guy said Fredbear's was already closed in FNAF 2, which takes place in 1987, so if both places got shut down they'd be called the Bites of '87. Plus the crying child didn't survive but the '87 victim did

I like to think the community made a big deal about the bite of 87 as a huge lore question but in reality scott just included it in the first game as a bit of funny banter about how little the fazbear company cares about safety

Aditional info, even scott himself confirmed that the fnaf 4 bite was the bite of 83 and NOT 87

the primary difference between 83 and 87 is that the victim survived the bite of 87, it just didn't have a frontal lobe. this was stated by the phone guy in the first game on the very first night.

And i think what adds a bit to this theory is that they mention the bite of 87 not 83 because the bite of 83 was reliable on the bullies when the bite of 87 was purely the animatronics itself
