Ronald Suny: Why Genocide? The Fate of the Armenians and Assyrians at the End of the Ottoman Empire
Показать описание
In late February, 1915, the Young Turks of the Ottoman Empire ordered the deportations and killings of thousands of Armenians and Assyrians. By 1922, between six hundred thousand and one million men, women, and children had been killed. They either died in massacres directly through the hands of Turks, or they lost their lives through starvation and emaciation on long death marches to the Syrian Desert. Addressing the many scholars which claim that these tragic events cannot be defined as genocide, historian Ronald Suny explained in his lecture how such a denialist account fails both empirically and morally. Thus, Suny’s main focus was not directed toward the question whether genocide had occurred, but rather why it happened.
