AUKUS partnership part of 'a web of alliances'

The Australian's senior writer Troy Bramston says the AUKUS partnership is the most “significant” decision since the 1980s, declaring Thursday's announcement a “milestone day”.
Australia is set to acquire nuclear-powered submarines under the new AUKUS trilateral security pact announced on Thursday.
“It’s very interesting actually because this obviously brings us closer to the United States using United States technology to build these nuclear-powered submarines and also acquired some US-made missiles,” Mr Bramston told Sky News Australia.
“It clearly is to deal with a rising China.
“It’s not so much to contain China but to make sure that China does operate with respect for international laws. Now there's been some criticism about that, of course, and we need to balance our trade relationship with China as well.
“But I think the Quad is especially important because it includes India and because it includes Japan, and that means we can’t be characterised as a simply Anglo-centric partner in the region.
“It’s part of, I think, a network, a web of alliances and web arrangements that are going to guide our defence and strategic outlook in the coming decades.”
