Spotlight On Non-Communicable Diseases: Why Are You At Risk & What Are The Preventive Measures?

In today's episode of 'The Medicine Box', the spotlight is on Non-Communicable diseases or NCDs. Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart disease, stroke, respiratory conditions such as asthma and cancer are examples of non-communicable diseases. They are conditions that cannot be passed on from one person to another and are caused by lifestyle choices such as poor diets, lack of exercise, alcohol and tobacco, along with the genetics and environment playing a key role. In India, NCDs cast a heavy burden, claiming 6 out of every 10 lives and occupying 4 out of every 10 hospital beds. Cardiovasular diseases stands as the leading cause of death, with stroke-related deaths occuring every 4 minutes. Diabetes is rampant, affecting 11% of the population. Over 3 crore Indians are asthmatic and when it comes to cancer we have a rising burden with 1 in 9 Indians are expected to suffer from the disease in their lifetime.
