The Kremlin believes that the return of its soldiers from Ukraine will become the main factor of political and social risks during Putin’s new life-long term. Dozens of spies from Russia and Belarus are trying to get to the 2024 Olympics. Moscow is forced to double the pay for medics and paramedics and other medical personnel who are sent to the temporarily occupied territories, as the locals mostly do not want to cooperate with the enemy or have left the territory.

If you need an English phrase to describe the horror of mass-deportation of people from their own lands; there is one from American history that is very visceral that everyone will recognize and understand: "Trail of Tears"

It refers to the mass expulsion of the indigenous population of what is now the east coast of the USA- they were deported and made to walk in winter conditions all the way to what is today referred to as the state of Oklahoma-- even though it was promised as an autonomous territory for native peoples who had been expelled from the east- but then as soon as we discovered oil there, we stole that land from them, too.... a familiar story, no?

It’s not upsetting per se that russian athletes can participate under neutral but those that do support the invasion or have non negligible ties with the military should certainly not be allowed to participate since the invasion is the root cause of why they can’t participate under their flag.
