Square-root(90) = (9+x) * (9+x) = 81+9x+9x+x*x) = 81+18*x+x*x. (The binomial theorem)
Since 90-81 = 9, the other terms must equal 9.
If we ignore the x*x term, we just calculate 18*x = 9. Therefore x = 9/18 = 0.5.

We could extend this method by applying Newton's method after getting the first decimal place.
We get 9.5 which is not quite right, because we left out the x*x term. So the answer is really a little less than 9.5.
We got x = 0.5. Then we divide by 2 to get 0.25. We reduce the denominator of 9/18 by 0.25 to get 8.75/18. (Divide by 2 because it is easier than taking the square root and gets sufficiently fast convergence.)
The difference between 8.25 and 9 is 0.25/9 = 1/36, about 3%.
By Newton's method the next estimate of the answer should be about 9.5 less 3% = 0.03. That would give 9.47 as the final estimate. Excel gives 9.487 and our error is about 0.2%.
With practice, it is possible to learn to do all of this by mental arithmetic. I am nearly 90, so I expect young people could learn this easily.
I used to apply Newton's method directly, but the DTW approach is better for mental arithmetic. The only reason to add Newton's method is to get an extra digit.
