When i was small we had an old boy used to run off a batch ever once in a while. If you saw a thin trail of wood smoke tricklin out of a certain draw you knew the old gentleman "practicing his chemistry". Lol

That's 1 of the very few "mountain talk" words or phrases I haven't heard. We just called it moonshine, sometimes just "shine", sometimes "corn squeezin's", and sometimes just "corn".

'Fraid I never heard of this word for moonshine! 😃🤪

Only put a few drops on my tongue to see what it tasted like. Never keered about using chemicals to alter my mental state. Never saw alkyhol solve any problems, but sure saw it cause a lot of heartache.

Never heard that one. Here in Alabama we call it wood whiskey, wild cat, white lighting or hooch.

Oh my gosh I haven't heard this since my granddad died. He used to help make it during the prohibition. He had some great stories.

More money in making gasohol now days, if you can get the permit. Never heard that. We mostly called it corn squizee'ns.

Never heard this term, but have tasted it. Never made it, but I know not to use a car/truck radiator for the condenser.

Another new one to me. However I unwisely took a big sip of "pertinent juice".at a music festival years ago. The campers in the tent next to us shared. I could swear I went blind for about ten minutes. Corie, I'm glad you don't know anyone making it. Your hair looks gorgeous by the way. Thankfully I can see.

This is a new one for me and I'm from West Virginia. Heard it called moonshine or fire water, but never peartening juice!

A lot of liquor used to be made in the mountains around here.

I have always heard it preferred to as Mountain Dew. But, my Granny preferred that other kind of Mountain Dew, (referring to soda pop) my daddy had to always make sure she had plenty of it because, she couldn’t live without it, she called the pop liquid sunshine and, she always said, it’ll put a little pep in your step but, it gave her no bad side effects like that peartening juice does.

Interesting word. Your mom and your family are doing such a good job of representing the Appalachian community. I have to be honest, I live in Canada and until I started watching this channel, I was under the impression that all Appalachians were poor and drug addicts. In hindsight, how narrow minded of me. I will never assume anything again, until I’ve researched it myself. Oh, reality TV is so misrepresented, I won’t be drawing any conclusions from that, ever again. It is so easy to to get drawn into this sort of thing!

Thank you for the lesson! Take care! 😊🇨🇦

My father and his brothers all sold corn liquor back in the early 20th Century. But, they were from Western, non-Appalachian, Kentucky.
