Good Evening.  Congrats to you on your journey in going forth to get your DNP. I believe that you may need this information that I am getting ready to share with you.  A PhD, DrPH, and DNP all can use the same words "Doctor."  As a DNP yes you can call yourself doctor but just let the patient know that you are a PhD.  A PhD is research based while a DNP or DrPH is practitioner focused.  Both degree produce original research that is peer-reviewed.  The only difference between a PhD/DNP is the  years in completing a dissertation vs organization capstone project.  Some nurses who feel that a DNP may be too narrow will decide to turn their focus to a DrPH (doctor of public health).  A DrPH is broader and the skills are transferable (pretty much you learn the same thing its just DNPs have a practice based requirement that is clinically focused vs a DrPH works within the community/population and has the freedom to conduct either a clinical based project or a education program). Do not ever short guess yourself, if you work hard and qualify to get your doctorate YOU ARE A DOCTOR. It is 4 years of your life and it can get stressful especially when it gets to the final capstone/dissertation.  Meaning it can be rejected (you walk away with nothing), deined with revisions (meaning you need to go back review the study information and resubmit to your mentor), and accepted (you graduate and become Dr).To keep the confusion down in the hospitals or clinical setings (keep the doctor happy), the business cards or the salutation on the lab coat may read "Kim Cash, DNP, FNP, RN" but never the word doctor unless you place it there.  The patients to tell the truth would not care as long as their needs are met :). My advise once you have eared that degree NEVER let a doctor or anyone call you Kim that is foul and unprofessional, no mam.

Great video! I personally plan to introduce myself as Dr. Richardson the Nurse Practitioner. There are plenty of patients that do understand the degree makes you a Doctor and you’re not trying to present yourself as anything other than what you are. Over 30 doctorate degrees and nurses are the only ones made to feel uncomfortable to actually use their title! That’s pretty unfortunate.

I completed my DNP and I introduce myself as Dr. Wilson because I have a doctorate. Just like Dr. Phil has a doctorate. The DNP program has given us the opportunity to educate patients about this new role.

I just want to say that It's really great to see your videos! As a person of color, I've seen so many people that don't look like me talk about higher education and careers. It's such a relief and is so encouraging to see someone of color who is out there really doing this shit and sharing the story. Keep up the good work!

Kim, first let me say you are a beautiful, well-spoken, young woman. I would also like to say you are doing a wonderful service to the young people of this world (or anyone else, for that matter) who may be considering following down your path. You present your information and yourself wonderfully, and your passion and sincerity show through, unreserved. I am honestly quite surprised you are not a full medical doctor, but we each have our own calling, and as long as you love what you are doing, and feel you are successful doing it, that is all that matters. So, thank you for making the world a better place, and best of luck on your journey to obtaining your DNP (which you will get, no doubt in my mind).

NPs will likely be required to have a DNP in the next 5-10years as entry-to-practice similar to CRNAs. So good for you for being proactive.

Omg. You are making me want to push through for my DNP. I have been going back and front with just getting my MSN in leadership instead because of NPs in practice telling me about problems with politics and doctors. May just be the place that we work that’s the problem. I love learning, so I totally get where you are coming from. Im not in a NP program but I have a NP textbook that I am browsing to get me prepared. Congratulations with everything.

I’m so GLAD I’m not the only person in love with school. That’s exactly why I’m going for my DNP.

First of all, I initially was subscribed to a few DNP channels before finding yours. Whenever I would watch other youtubers who are currently DNP or pursuing it, I found that their information was off or misleading and I became so confused with their content and found myself unsubscribing! Prior to even subscribing to anyone I did my own research about the DNP and made the decision to pursue a it for several personal reasons that align with yours. Just wanted to let you know that your channel has been the most sensible, informative, and accurate regarding DNP, MSN Etc. I am soo glad I found your channel and now subscribed.

I struggle with my age a lot in my field. I am 22 and I am going for my RN and I already have a BAS and CNA and sometimes I think people don't trust I know what I'm talking about. But you just gave me hope that it will get better as I get even more education.
