My dad was a carpenter, I remember working with him at a doctors office many years ago, the doctor needed a door hung. This was in the sixties before all the cool battery tools, so my dad used a chisel and hammer to carve out and set the hinges, a bit and brace to drill the holes for the lockset, he cut the trim by hand and crafted everything to fit and look perfect. He gave the doctor the bill, and the doctor complained about the price, my dad asked him why charged as much as he did and the doctor said something like, "I had to go through years of school and years as an intern to learn to be a doctor". So my father said to him, "I can't take out an appendix, but you can't hang a door". You can't argue that. I miss him and his simple wisdom dearly.

Mike "I am 55 year old oil field worker in Alberta. When Victor talks about the farmers and soldiers paying the ultimate price for our ideologies it makes my eye's water. We need the working man and woman to be free, strong and prosperous. Thx you brother keep speaking the truth. Victor Davis Hanson has always been a favorite of mine.

My grandfather was a carpenter/furniture maker in Germany. He lost some money after WWI and a lot after WWII. Today I am preparing to move back into the house he built. I worked my whole life and rather successful as scientist, researcher, professor at UIS universities. Now at 70 I want to make something that lasts. Muscle work. There is some kind of cycle in the generations. Thank you Victor, thank you Mike.

This episode got me really choked up. My father was raised on, and worked his family's citrus farm. When he came of age, he like his older brothers, enlisted in the military. He worked hard as a diesel mechanic most of his adult life, in harsh conditions. He provided for his family and gave me and my brother a wonderful example to follow. This man wrote a check for my college education a semester at a time. He is a conservative and a very patriotic American. Yet some feel that HE is what's wrong with America, because he stands on his values and refuses to bend the knee to the entitled leftists that would have the nerve to call him "deplorable." I owe my father everything, and we in civilized society owe a debt of gratitude to all of those men and women who get up early, pack a lunch, and go off to do the hard work every day.

63 attorney here, after retirement I dedicated all of my time to restoring my house, which was built in 1944. I watched a lot of DYI videos, and learned to do simple plumbing and electrical repairs. And afterwards, when I needed to hire a plumber, electrician, roofer, etc., they would let me help whenever possible. I also spent a lot of time buying parts at the supply stores (and not at Home Depot). I have great respect for "honest" tradesmen, and in many ways I believe that they contribute more to our society than the +1 million lawyers practicing today.

I am a machinist in a steel mill that's over 100 years old. It is an amazing experience. Some of the people you meet are so dedicated and the absolute backbone of our society. I have worked with about a dozen guys that have had 40-52 years in the plant. To see a blast furnace up close is a humbling experience.

This was uplifting. My 47 year old son who has a Bachelor's degree in Pre-law and Sociology from UCR, went back to community college to learn H-Vac skills, and now has a $100, 000 a year job as a dehumidication technician for a firm and travels, all expenses paid, all over the country.

As a college educated professional, I always point out to people the highways my construction-worker dad helped pour and brick buildings he built. While successful and productive in my own “work”, I have always been somewhat jealous of the semi-permanence of the physical things he created.
This desire to do something REAL led me to hobby woodworking and completing other home projects.
Great topic and fantastic interview!

The emperor has been naked for a long time, but those of us who pointed it out were labeled conspiracy theorists.

Farmer's daughter here. You can't leave those values. They have followed me all my life and made me different from my colleagues. I am also a classically trained musician. My parents were Conservatives when it wasn't cool. But listening to them at the kitchen table and working with folks from the farm, that was the best education of my life.

Super conversation, and hail from indigenous tribe from the central coast of California. My family are/were into agriculture and we raise all of our own stock, as we have done for hundreds of years, so I feel all of the emotional perspective of this guest. I have held this similar conversation with peers and strangers alike in the last year. The near future is so inflammatory that we found it very important relocate to a somewhat more rural area just because I see what's on the horizon. I am retired navy intel, so I know "things", and I still have family and friends serving on active duty, so I hope folks take precautions every day and be self and situationally aware at all times.

Fun fact for you Mike... I served in the Ranger Regiment, my father served in Korea, my grandfather served in world war II... And on and on it goes through the civil war war of 1812 revolutionary war even back into England where we served in the British army... My son just graduated from Tulsa welding school and I'll be damned if he's going to put a uniform on... America's going to have to find a different family to go and fight their wars in the future... I don't know who's going to protect the silicon valley families when the next war happens but it isn't going to be mine...

That account of the man who took his life is heart wrenching. I'm Mennonite, and we're historically mostly farmers. Yes, being a farmer is a pejorative term, and I spent a large part of my life feeling ashamed to say I was Mennonite. But the work ethic served me well, and now that I'm in my 60's, I say it unapologetically. (Not proudly, because that's not the Mennonite way lol). Farmers are the backbone of any country. Period. That's why they're under attack.
