My husband and I talked about wanting to get married and have children early on when we were dating, to make our views clear, even if we wouldn’t end up together. We were about 8 months in when we started seriously hinting and discussing that we both saw a proposal on the horizon. Engaged after 1 year of dating, stayed engaged for 1 year, and we’ve been married almost 9 years now.

"She's a single mom .... who is trying to do right by her son ..." That is the problem. Don't have children with someone you can't commit to spending your entire life with. If you are a single mom, understand that you are asking a man to take on an incredible responsibility at an incredible risk. You already had one failed failed "family" relationship in which you had a child. Why would a man want to commit to helping you raise another man's child? I'm not saying its always a "no", but don't be surprised if there is a lot for a guy to think about.

But since I was raised religious, he did understand the Vow in front of God meant a lot to me. It has been a few decades, I am not sure if he changed his mind, but I know we both do see things differently now that we are married compared to before.
