'The American Mega Drive' or 'The Origin of Genesis'

The why and how of Sega's 16-bit system having two names. (Chapter markers and more below...)

The following video is a RE-UPLOAD of the original episode, aired on July 2, 2021. The reason for re-uploading is that the original file was somehow corrupted by YouTube's processing system, resulting in the video cutting off at the 10 minute mark. Despite trying to fix the problem multiple times, nothing worked. The video is exactly the same as before, but if you saw it the first time around, try to still look surprised.

The Genesis is one of the best video game systems ever made, a huge leap forward in technology when it came out, and the name/logo + console design of the model 1 are super badass!

I'm Brazil it was always known as Mega Drive. And up to the 2010s, it was still pretty big and being sold everywhere around here.

Due to that, the first videogame i ever bought with my own money was that original "phat" MegaDrive. Bought it dirty cheap and i loved it.

I still get nostalgic from the afternoons that i spent playing classics like Super Hang On, Sonic 1, Golden Axe, Run Ark, Altered Beast and Chase HQ.

I think this was a blessing in disguise for Sega America, their North American strategy for branding the 16 bit console would NOT have worked with the “mega drive” name IMO, but Genesis was just the thing.
