Himender Bharti on Growth of Linnaean Thought, Impact of Common Descent and Current Understanding

Himender Bharti, Professor, Punjabi University, conducted a session on "Growth of Linnaean thought, impact of common descent and current understanding" as part of the workshop "The Grand Challenges: Insect Decline, Causes, and Consequences," a national-level seminar for the college students held on November 28 and 29, 2024.

Professor Bharti's presentation outlined the shift from Linnaean taxonomy to modern molecular approaches in biological classification. Though Linnaean's approach was foundational, Darwin's "Tree of Life" and Mayr's species definition as interbreeding populations revolutionised the field. He highlighted the crucial role of taxonomy for conservation in the face of extinction and climate change.
