Uncomfortable fact: violence works. It worked from the moment that one of these 🐵 realised that these 🤛🤜 can break these 💀, and will continue to work for as long as that remains the case. It's a high-risk, high-reward method for getting what you want and imposing your will on others, that works often enough for it to be a logical option in many, many situations. It certainly isn't always the _best_ option, indeed it's often the very _worst_ option, but because it's rooted in the fundamental physics and biology of our situation, rather than more nebulous and fragile things like customs and laws, it's always _an_ option. You could argue that the process of civilization is the process of putting layers and layers of better options on top of violence so that most people, most of the time, never get down to it, but sometimes, especially when civilization is crumbling, that house-of-cards of better options tumbles down to reveal good-old-bad-old violence, sitting patiently at the bottom of all the decision trees, waiting.

The adverse of the "Right of Conquest" is the "Right of Sovereignty."

If you defend your geographic location from a would-be conqueror, you can reasonably declare to the world your claim to sovereignty. Something you are doing is working, and that has been made evident on the World Stage.

Had a friend who literally was arguing with me yesterday that the Jews should "go back to Egypt" because that was where they originally came from. I couldn't believe how ridiculous the argument was considering that for one, Jews were basically forced out of Egypt in the 50s and 60s, and two, almost all the lands where Arabs live were conquered and colonized by the Arabs in the 7th century---Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Syria, Iraq, Tunisia, Libya, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan; none of them were Arab 1500 years ago.

This is also coming from someone who lives in Canada, and if she thinks Jews should leave Israel because Israel is colonized land, then why doesn't she leave Canada since Canada is also colonized land and her family doesn't originate from this continent. But no, rules for thee but not for me.

Descriptive vs proscriptive statements.

I am so tired with the “ought” crowd and their empty arguments. I live in the world of “is”

If the US went all Lebensraum on Mexico we could have a nice domestic oil supply.

Not saying we should but if concouring the neighbors became acceptable again that's probably one of the first ones that would happen.

Ultimately, the idea of right of conquest comes down to people that work harder, smarter and plan better get rewarded while those who do not are punished.
It's increasingly more and more difficult for me to not see it as the natural, rational state.

Is strength, power and wealth granted to us only so we can bully, kill and conquer? Conquer is not a right any more than owning slaves is a right. It is a choice. That is reality.

But no one has successfully managed to conquer the entire world and bring the world under one ruler for all of human history.

I wish the all the “stolen land” folks could watch this.

Just because something happened doesn't mean it should continue the only reason the right of conquest existed was due to the power imbalance

Well Conquest doesn't seem to work too well for the last 6 decades because vicious uprisings and resistance movements almost inevitably pop up and you have to practically devastate the people and the land to 1945 Germany Levels of ruin to pacify the are enough for enough compliance not to rebel endlessly and then the Land is practically worthless in the aftermath for Years if not decades. Even then that's not a guarantee to work...
