True fact: the shortest home run ever hit was hit exactly like this but the ball got stuck in the mud and nobody could find it. Andy Oyler proceeded to round the bases and the ball was next to home plate the entire time.

Fun fact that’s also how the shortest home run in mlb history happened. In 1904 Andy Oyler of the Minneapolis Millers minor league team hit a ball that got stuck in 24 inches of mud allowing him to run the bases before anyone could find it

This is why groundskeeping at baseball fields is important. Someone didn't get the tarp out fast enough during a rain, or overwatered the infield dirt, or didn't run the tamper down over the whole dish...or some combination of all of that. This just shouldn't ever happen.
