To Janssen specialists and fans the name Manders is certainly no stranger. In fact it is safe to say the amicable meat trader from Baarle Nassau was one of the most important Janssen Arendonk collectors in the world.
Just to give you an idea: in 1997 Piet Manders sold his collection of Janssen pigeons. At that moment it counted no less than 91 originals, including the last daughter of “Jonge Merckx”, two sons of “Jonge Raket of ‘76”, four children and thirteen grandchildren of “Blauwe Winterjonge”, a daughter of “Voske Volière”, three children of “Schouwman”, a son of “Witplak”, thirteen grandchildren of “Afgekeurde”, two children and eleven grandchildren of “Goede Kapot Borstbeen”, two children of “Beul”, four children of “Vechter”, five children of “Kleine van de Vos” and five children of “Vos van ‘93”.
At that point Piet Manders estimated he had bought over 400 direct Janssen from the brothers in Arendonk during his career. As a matter of fact he used to buy so many that at one point he had to call his friend pigeon journalist August Daelemans to go to the famous Schoolstraat to buy some birds as the brothers refused to sell any more to him, saying “You’ve already bought enough”. In other words, the Janssen brothers feared Piet Manders’ Janssen collection would become more important than their own! Not completely surprising if you look at the birds which were to be found in his collection. A more complete cross section of the Janssen Arendonk could hardly be found. Indeed, the catalog of the sale on 6 December 1997 rightly stated “Manders still owns young pigeons descending from the old lineages, which have been unavailable in Arendonk for a long time now”.
