Money

Written by Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford, Money, That's What I Want, is a rhythm and blues classic song, which was the first hit record for Gordy's Motown Records. Barrett Strong recorded it in 1959, as a single for Motown’s Tamla label.

Many artists later recorded the tune, including The Beatles in 1963. The Beatles recorded Money in seven takes, on July 18th 1963. A series of piano overdubs was later added by producer George Martin, who plays on the recording.

According to George Harrison, the group discovered Barrett Strong's version at Brian Epstein's record store. Even though it wasn’t a hit in the UK, it had been issued on London Records in 1960. The Beatles had previously performed the song during their audition at Decca Records, on January 1st 1962, with Pete Best still on drums at the time. The Beatles also recorded it six times for the BBC radio.

Money was first released in the UK by the Beatles, on November 22nd 1963, on their, With The Beatles LP, then later in the United States, on April 10th 1964.
