In this video, I wanted to start sharing some of my experiences from starting & running a company in Tokyo for the last 5 years. Because this is a rather large topic, I’ll make a few videos about entrepreneurism in Japan, with this first one being about Japanese business culture, and what to expect when you start a company in Japan. We are going to cover things like:

1) Japanese business culture characteristics
2) What are Japanese customers like?
3) Do you need to speak Japanese?
4) How do Japanese companies make decisions?

I worked in Japan for four years. While it was difficult at first to memorize all the minute manners and customs (like how to trade meishi), I got so used to it that I couldn't work in any other countries anymore. Now, when I work for my American boss, I bow to him every time I see him, and he thinks I'm a weirdo.

I enjoyed this. Different perspective, not judging, and informative. I hope more videos similar to this are produced. Thanks!

5:12 Japanese companies don’t want to be the first to try something new. They actually want to be more like the 10th.

Thank you for this video. I’m an American struggling to acclimate to a Japanese office for the first time, specifically I’m trying to get used to communication being much more minimal and finding the right balance with just often I should be giving status updated to my manager, who has been extremely hands-off and not very straightforward in their communication style compared to American office culture.

Thank you for the educational content, Connor!

We currently work with Japanese vendors and aim to grow our reach.

Is there a specific company in Japan that you would recommend for a professional translator? Tokyo is our main location.

Thank you, Connor.

I worked for 4 years in digital advertising where everything (and every deal) is almost DYI style. What you are telling sounds terrible compared to my experience hahaha
