Kemi Badenoch wins Conservative race but can she really beat Labour?

Kemi Badenoch is the new leader of the Conservative Party after beating Robert Jenrick in what is an historic moment - the first black female leader of one of the UK’s main political parties. But does she have any chance of winning the next election? Will she even hang on that long with the Tories’ history of ditching leaders who don't deliver? Are the Labour Party the real winners here?

On this episode of the Political Fourcast, Cathy Newman is joined by former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, former Conservative MP Laura Farris, who lost her seat to the Liberal Democrats in July, and Luke Tryll, Executive Director of the polling firm More in Common.

Personally, I have no issue with the UK having a Black Prime Minister as it's nice to see history being made and glass ceilings shattered. Putting aside the ethnicity of the Tory Leader, it's the Tory Party that should be the focus here. This is a Party that has fallen far from it's founding principles and the CURRENT iteration of the Tories, like their MAGA counterparts in the US is only interested in power, and the uses to which power can be put to benefit their backers and their powerful and wealthy supporters. Not that the Tories, even at their founding ever had the interests of the people in mind. Vested Interests lie at the heart of the Tory Party (as it does also in Labour, and in the Liberal Democrats, or ANY organized group of people) and the Tories will always serve first, their vested interests.

That by the time it got to members voting if your choice was out of the race it was Hobson's choice : an apparently free choice when there is no real alternative and the necessity of accepting one of two equally objectionable alternatives.

I feel some of these lot are delusional or just attempting to avoid argument if they think race is only important for 1% of the general electorate. Race has been important in all countries throughout the history of man for significant proportions of the population, especially within the UK. For those delusional enough to think otherwise just look at Brexit. London is not representative of the UK, and Rishi wouldn’t have been voted in if it were down to the general electorate. Liz getting the opportunity before Rishi, despite her manifestos being unfunded and nonsensical showed again the nasty look of racism
