Is it too restricting to make design decisions about a character before actually sketching (e.g. how to represent personality traits)? Or is the video just a way of starting out when the character is less defined? ie. finding characters vs finding designs that represent specific characters.

My problem with using real animal and human references is that I start to find myself copying the photo. This had always been my problem. How so I keep that from happening?
