Phineas Gage is the real-life person this happened to. A long time ago, he was working on the railroad, and an explosion happened that was not supposed to. An iron rod pierced straight through his head. He lived, but his life was forever changed. See, before the accident, he was nice, spoke kindly, outgoing, and well liked. The injury was so traumatic that it changed his behavior. He became mean, drank, and used profanity a lot after what happened to him.

Something similar happened to a guy that was doing some work on his house (I thinks he was working on his house might be wrong. Doesn't really matter). He was on a ladder drilling something and fell off the ladder and landed head first on the drill bit, which was about the size of that rebar. He went to the ER and basically what happened was the drill didn't actually damage his brain at all, just pushed it out of the way. Aside from having a hole in his eye socket, he was just fine; absolutely no brain damage. So yeah, this guy surviving this and being just fine afterward is possible, though highly imporbable.

I saw a similar story on Ripley's Believe It or Not. Pizza delivery guy got a piece of re-bar through his forehead as he was driving home. He survived, but doctors thought he would never walk again. It took some time, but he was walking.
