That's only supposed to happen at 2am when you're the on call guy.

Bet that electrician came walking out looking like a chimney sweep.

Exactly why as a mechanic I argue with people who say "it was just a blown fuse" A fuse doesn't go bad, it can only blow with over current. Over current can only occur when a fault is present.

Myself am a trained electrician. And one thing you do not supposed to do is re-energize a circuit when the breaker has tripped or the fuse has blown. Until you have ascertain the root cause. Also energizing 60, 000 volts immediately into that transformer not knowing what the root cause...you just witnessed the aftermath.

Steps for fixing a blown transformer fuse:
1. Remove old fuse.
2. Find and repair short-circuit.
3. Install new fuse.

Don't skip step 2. The fuse has blown for a reason.

"Put the new fuse in and see if it blows" said no 9.6 kV lineman ever.

Had a family friend in the ‘60s who worked for Dallas Power & Light at the main power station. Chubby fellow. Touched a live line one day. Survived. Went from approximately 240# to 100# post incident. Wild! Recovery took one year, after which he returned to work, but his body ached for the rest of his life. Nice man with a nice family. Glad he made it. All you Sparky’s out there, be safe, safe, safe! ✌️

There is always a reason the fuse popped in the first place. I'm a retired electrician, I lived long enough to retire

As a licensed proctologist, I can tell you that this was unlike the usual sharts that I’ve seen in my office.

As an Electric Station Operator for 31 years while working for the LADWP I was trained and personally witnessed quite a few of flashovers, that’s the reason we wear Nomex clothing and cotton clothes. When a person has the misfortune to be inside of a flashover I temperature is compared to the surface of the sun ☀️.

that breaker popped for a reason. those poles are used to reconnect the popped breakers, but somehow a path to ground was achieved .

“Honey, the power’s out. Should we call the city?”

“What for? Hand me that pole.”

My neighbor was a lineman in the sixties and seventies when I was a kid. He was always going to a funeral.
The guys on the helicopters are amazing. There's no funeral when they screw up. They are just gone.

I’m a power engineer and I think I can add some context here.
That wasn’t supposed to happen.

EDIT: Some of you want actual explanations of what happened, so here it is. It exploded. You’re welcome.

When I was growing up the lady next door son who worked for Seattle city light nearly got killed when the transformer he was working on exploded like that. Hope the lineman wasn't hurt too bad. Thoughts and prayers.
