What is Luna Diabetes?

We’ve been talking about Luna for a couple of years now, but it’s been pretty mysterious. The promise of “better nights for better days,” and the concept of some kind of insulin pump that you only wear overnight are the only details I’ve been able to report. But now the company is moving into clinical trials, so we are learning a lot more.

This week, you’ll hear from one of the founders of Luna. John Sjölund lives with type 1 – he may be a familiar name to many of you because John invented Timesulin, a smart cap for an insulin pen which was acquired by Bigfoot Biomedical which was then acquired by Abbott (and, yes, I ask John about all of that). The other two founders are Sean Saint and John Brilliant.

This isn’t a typical pump infusion set; you push the small pump on, sort of like a thumbtack, and remove it in the morning. Users still take their basal insulin – the overnight pump is only there for tiny doses of fast-acting. The settings are very simple – the only input from users is total daily long-acting insulin use.

What would be the point? Isn’t that what basal is for?
