SHEIN Paying Influencers To Lie?

Shein is one of the leading brands in “fast fashion”. They sell extremely cheap clothes and have been exposed for their unsafe and unethical workplace environment in their Chinese factories. In hopes of cleaning up their horrible reputation, Shein flew a group of influencers to see the Shein headquarters in China and share the 'truth' about the company.

“We investigated ourselves and found nothing wrong.”

Me, having actually lived in China, laughing out loud when that influencer was saying she has seen China. Girl, China is THE BEST at presenting the best side of itself to foreigners while hiding what really happens. I got to witness one of the schools I worked at, practice having a lesson in preparation for this British donor. Everything down to the students questions and answers were scripted.

The fact the Shein invited influencers instead of journalists tells me all I need to know.

My nerd (sister) has always been buying from SHEIN, and I’ve told her the whole time she’s supporting modern slavery. She’s just like “okay, and?” I just can’t believe what people have come to in America not caring about anyone else but themselves.

It's hard to know how to avoid the sweatshop problem. For instance, most of the clothes on Amazon are the exact same things as Shein sells, but marked up 3-4 times. I try to get clothes made in the US/Europe when I can, but it's so rare to find and usually very expensive.

I used to shop for some basics on Shein. Surprisingly most of the clothes I got turned out nice and have held up for years. It wasn’t till I saw the research into the company a while ago that I decided to stop buying from them. However, I would never throw away the clothes that I have already purchased because that seems like a waste. Everything in our lives today “causes cancer, contains lead, etc etc” At that rate might as well throw away everything you own. The real enemy is falling prey to this modern idea of “needing” more, constantly. Keep and wear what you already have and only buy things you truly need and know is sustainable.

That's a real shame. Here in Brasil I have a hard time finding clothes I like at a reasonable price. Once I started shopping at Shein, my closet got more colorful, I felt like I was dressing better.. and it didn't break the bank. I honestly don't have much to complain about the quality of the things I got (maybe I was lucky). But to think about what goes on behind the scenes, makes me feel guilty. I don't have the balls to throw these clothes away, but I'll avoid buying anything there again.

it's like when a kid is in college and they know their parents are coming to visit. they clean up real well, hide anything they don't want to be seen, and keep up the charade until they leave!

I used to love Shein. I was just about to buy a $26 Trench Coat however, after listening to this I am reconsidering my decision. The health risk and the treatment of the people creating these products is very disturbing.

I did my course end project for school on the negative effects and impacts of fast fashion. I was shocked and horrified by what I found. I’ll never be buying from shein again.

I've bought SHEIN once and immediately sent everything back. The smell from the items was atrocious! When I sent the items back I went online and did some research about the company and I will NEVER buy that crap again! Now I either shop with ThredUp or try to find items from American made companies. We need to bring our money back home!

It really is wild to me how so many people don't understand how clothes are made. Almost every article of clothing you wear was made by a human. Once you understand the labor that goes into clothing, it will make you much more selective with your purchases.

Never heard of Shein until today. But a clothing company in China not treating workers with basic rights does not suprise me.

My roommate buys tons of clothes from Shein. Literally she gets Shein packages all the time- and I’ve said something about it, but she just says she can’t afford anything else… no girl. No. Those Chinese laborers can’t afford anything.

Whoa?! You mean companies are dishonest and pay celebrities and other people to be dishonest as well?! I'm shocked.

I’ve never bought anything from Shein, Wish, or Temu. But this stuff does beg the question; how is any of that worse than working in a wet market? How is any of that any worse than Nike doing the same thing and charging exorbitant prices for their garbage? I’m more concerned with China raking in vast amounts of money than I am with people taking a job they hate.

Wow, sickening. I just ordered $106 AUD of clothes from SHEIN, 1st time I've ordered clothes online. Now I feel sick & guilty as hell. I'll be deleting my account with them & their app as soon as I'm done watching this. I needed new cheap clothes desperately as I live in a remote outback town with no local options for clothes shopping, I'll be doing better next time, starting with research into the companies I spend with. Thanks Brett & team 👍Edit: me saving a few dollars is not worth adding to the suffering & injustice of my fellow humans ✌ 💕
