NH2- Lewis Structure: How to Draw the Lewis Structure for NH2-

A step-by-step explanation of how to draw the NH2- Lewis Dot Structure (Azanide ).

For the NH2- structure use the periodic table to find the total number of valence electrons for the NH2- molecule. Once we know how many valence electrons there are in NH2- we can distribute them around the central atom with the goal of filling the outer shells of each atom.

In the Lewis structure of NH2- structure there are a total of 8 valence electrons. NH2- is also called Azanide .

Also note that you should put the NH2- Lewis structure in brackets with as 1- on the outside to show that it is an ion with a negative one charge.

----- Steps to Write Lewis Structure for compounds like NH2- -----
1. Find the total valence electrons for the NH2- molecule.
2. Put the least electronegative atom in the center. Note: Hydrogen (H) always goes outside.
3. Put two electrons between atoms to form a chemical bond.
4. Complete octets on outside atoms.
5. If central atom does not have an octet, move electrons from outer atoms to form double or triple bonds.

----- Lewis Resources -----

Lewis Structures, also called Electron Dot Structures, are important to learn because they help us understand how atoms and electrons are arranged in a molecule, such as Azanide . This can help us determine the molecular geometry, how the molecule might react with other molecules, and some of the physical properties of the molecule (like boiling point and surface tension).

Hey, I'm not sure if you'll respond but it's worth a shot. So I'm having difficulties understanding Nitrogen. Nitrogen has 5 VE, and its binds with two Hydrogens. Wouldn't there be three VE left(one lone pair and an extra Ve)? However, NH2 is depicted with two lone pairs. NH3 is quite simple for me to understand. It bonds with N, and 3 electrons are shared and therefore NH3 has a lone pair. But NH2 is somewhat confusing to me.

Great video, it's helping me greatly with my studies. with this Lewis structure, I see N as the central atom and it has 4 charge clouds. Does that make this a tetrahedral geometry or a bent geometry?

Dr.B,
What is the hybridization of the nitrogen atom in this ion?
Thanks!

Where does the extra electron come from?

Hi. What happen if my exercise is only NH2 with out the (-). ?? Somebody explain to me please.

Im confused you said there was 3 electrons for hydrogen so where does the other one go

1But here the nitrogen is showing 2 covalency by making two bonds and by counting lone pair also its 6 but i have studied that nitrogen can only show two co valency 3 or 4 and can have 3 bonds and a lone pair
2 According to the law the - sign will be on corner atoms but here it is not justified where the charge is
Please clear my doubt

You didn't mention how there is a lone pair on one of the hydrogen atoms.

how is the ad. longer than the video itself

Does this now mean the nitrogen has a total of 10 electrons?
