How to Install Oracle on a Mac (2020)

Are you looking for how to install Oracle on a Mac?

Oracle doesn't offer a download of their database (either Oracle Database or Oracle Express) for macOS, so you can't install it directly on your MacBook or iMac.

However, it's possible to get it running on your Mac using a virtual machine.

It's pretty easy to set up, and Oracle even offers the software and files to do it.

M1 Mac:
Are you running an M1 Mac? If so, you'll likely get errors when trying to install or connect to the database in the virtual machine. This is because the VirtualBox and/or the image does not support the M1 CPUs in the newer Mac computers. The other option for setting up Oracle is using Docker, but that also does not work with M1.
This is the only way to get Oracle to work on M1 Macs as far as I know, until the Docker images or VM images are updated.

Thank you for the hard work putting together this video! It worked perfectly. I did receive a Legacy System Extension warning about the Oracle America, Inc extension that might not be compatible with a future Mac OS. I'm on Monterey. We all may have to switch to Docker? I'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I saw your Docker video and this was so much easier.

Hello, Thank you for creating this and the other videos you have on your channel, they are very helpful. I do have a question about connecting to a database though. When you connect as you have advised in the video, the database that is produced has preset tables, is this standard for databases in oracle? I need to complete a project in which I have designed and will code a database, and I am trying to see if these preset tables (assign, countries, departments, etc...) can be removed. Thanks!
