I started as a staffer with Travelers. The training was great but pay was garbage. Remember as a staffer you take the claim from start to finish. You don’t get to pass it on to desk adjuster. You are the field and desk adjuster. I did twice as much work as a staffer than I do now as an IA.

When I worked for Allstate on the cat team, it was a 10 day on 4 day off schedule, you could book your own hotel, rental car, and flight within certain limits, and it was usually 3 claims per day.

Biggest downside I see in Staff side or hear from my buddies that have worked both is that they all seem to prefer the IA side because of the fact that claims have limit to what you handle. I would say by far the hardest part of the job for me on staff side has absolutely nothing to due with the work or adjusting but the staff company rules or the fact that you represent the insurance company and are expected to answer every phone call that’s comes back your way or follow up question from any number of insureds you have worked with. Your phone is always ringing and they will come back on you and ask why you haven’t called someone in 24 hrs or so forth. IA friends have told me they have to put up with so much less hassle for on that end which alone makes it worth it. I mostly tend to hear the downside of Independent is the possible gaps in work that sometimes happen. I would say you put up with a lot more work on the back service end with staff that is probably for hardest part of job.

After three years as a IA I’m desperately looking for a staff position. Tired of paying for hotels gas food etc and the inconsistent work
