Yes, there are plenty of knowledgeable, hard working personal trainers out there who are truly dedicated to their clients and great at what they do in terms of helping them build muscle, lose fat and improve their strength and health. If you are a personal trainer and are reading this right now, you're probably more into the "evidence based" side of fitness and so good chance you're one of them.⁣ However, after 20 years at this I would very confidently say that the majority of average "certified trainers" at your typical big box gym really don't have a clue what they're doing a good portion of the time.⁣ These certifications are often pretty straightforward to get, and in many cases a person can essentially go from having no training and nutrition experience whatsoever to actively training clients in the gym within a few months.⁣ It actually shocks me when I see some of the horrendous exercise form, training programs and general muscle building and fat loss advice being given and the fact that people are actually paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars a month for it.⁣ Then there's the trainers who clearly don't even care about what's going on and will sit there looking completely uninterested and scrolling through their phone as their client performs an exercise.⁣ Bottom line?⁣ If you are wanting to work with an in-person trainer for whatever reason, definitely do some extensive research first in order to find the right one. Don't make the mistake of assuming the "certified PT" title is enough, since it very often means jack squat on its own.⁣

This is so true. Especially when you go to a specific Fitness center/gym and they offer "free" sessions with a "certified" personal trainer (just an employee at the gym). Those guys/gals are a joke. I cringe every time I watch them supposedly giving advice to their clients. No form adjustments or anything. Just writing in a book what they are doing, smh

I’m currently learning to be one and some of these comments are scaring me. I would assume most taking these tests are paying attention to the “proper form” portion of said program as it mentions that at least in the one I’m taking (NASM). I made a mark in my heart for that to always be a thing! Thank God I follow some amazing fitness people on here who always emphasize the importance of proper form including this guy!

I just got my personal training certificate to help clients achieve their goals i really do want to help them. But when people go first time in the gym the best option is to have a personal trainer or bring a friend who has basic knowledge, its good to have someone pushing you to the limits. I workout alone but i used to have a gym bro, i moved to another country and i can tell its really hard. Some people dont have a problem working out alone and thats totally fine but for beginners its always good to have someone who knows more than you.(i hope you have a wonderful day 😊)

I was once applying for a personal training job and they had me do some things like make up an exercise list for a specific type of client and then shadow the trainers while they work to see what it looked like. They kept saying that all of my regiments were “too easy” for the clients they faced. I then went in for my day to shadow and... One client was almost throwing up because she was going way past her limited, another client kept complaining about her back (and nobody mentioned that her squat form was really bad), and another client was pushing weights waaay beyond what he was supposed to. He kept saying he was fine, but it was painfully obvious that he wasn’t and just wanted the ego boost. I wanted to help spot him during the bench press because it looked like his left arm was going to cave in. But the trainer there said not to and to just let him do whatever he wanted. I was like... WHAT??? He’s clearly lopsided here! So yeah... Being certified doesn’t mean that you know what you’re doing. And I didn’t get the job btw 😂

It's quite sad actually, these guys are supposed to be the elite in terms of fitness knowledge and then you look over and see them doing plate presses.

Joined a gym a few months ago, got a couple free sessions with a PT. Decided why not, let's see if I can get some pointers on my lifting form. First session, went to go do squats, and...."Breath out on the way down". Yeah. Did not continue with that trainer.

My first PT at gold's was actually good and I saw gains immediately after correcting all of the technical stuff that I was doing wrong for 2 years. Then they fired him and replaced him with a guy with noodle arms. I was like "sir, I should coach you."

they despise me because i simply "don't have the physique to back my info" as if research and sean don't exist.. 🙄🔫

When I see a client doing an exercise with bad form and the PT just watching

Felt this.
Had a complimentary training session, and my trainer offered little to no advice on how to properly do certain lifts.

Sure, I learned some cool stretches and general nutrition advice, but there was little help on lifting form.

I used to pay 200 dollars for a month for a trainer that just makes me do plate presses and other useless stuff like behind the neck lat pull downs. I couldn't tell him that I knew the exercise was bullshit because he's a bodybuilder and I'm just a newbie that did his research.

I knew someone who became a PT in like two weeks. That two weeks not only included the program they were working with (I think ISSA) but also working with an actual CPT, talking to a nutritionist, and reading books on muscle anatomy.

On the flipside, I met someone who took six months to take the same course, and has now been fired from three gyms and an online coaching program.

This hits home, I took a friend to the gym once who was “trying” to better himself, he sat through my push and leg days before but I took him to the gym to do pull, and I took him through my full pull day routine (after warning him I do a lot of pull because of grappling and that he didn’t need to do all the sets), but the next day DOMS he had was apparently so absurd that he couldn’t fully extend his arms to wash his hair even, and I felt bad because I knew I overtrained him, but I told him, we’ll take a couple days off and that we will never go to that degree of overworking again, but his Physical Therapist parents shutdown our workouts completely, said he might have broken his arm and forbade me from taking him to the gym. Funny thing is, when the DOMS disappeared after a couple days, they didn’t admit that they were wrong and I still wasn’t able to take him to the gym, but I definitely learned the lesson to never make a beginner go near failure until they’re invested and having fun.
