Cliffhanger Guide to Climbing Gear

The sequel to Vertical Limit Guide to Climbing. This instructional video explores the essential gear for free soloing. Also discussed is harness inspection and the fastest way of bolting routes. Updated version to fix audio problem.

I don't always free solo, but when I do, I always use a helicopter to get down. Make sure to anchor the helicopter to the rock face and use redundant anchors so it doesn't fall.

If you are out climbing with someone inexperienced:
*Make sure to start out with free solo climbing. It is a great way to learn the sport since no time is waisted to learn all the gear and rope techniques.
*Also make sure that the person carries a teddy pet in case of emergency.

If you are ever going to attempt mountain rescue with a helicopter- follow these rules:
*Never use the winch to get someone into the helicopter. Instead use the winch to make a traverse line.
*Secure the cable with one single piton and connect it to the wire using two oval biners. If you have more you can build a chain all the way to the helicopter. Just remember to close the screwgates.
*Make the most inexperienced person carry the backpack and put her on long sling so that she can hardly reach up to the wire. Also remember to weigh her down so that the harness fails at a little bit more than two tons.

To everyone that is disturbed over the gear it makes sence if there is passages that requires aid climbing along the route.

The outstanding thing about this scene is that a lot of it was filmed in location. Michelle Joyner talks about it it an interview. She actually hung out there ( although she had a safety wire which is not seen on the screen ). She said that a double, an actual female climber did the fall. She, the double was also wired with a wire attached to a winch as well as to device that slowed & stopped her fall. The climber who doubled Stallone was Wolfgang Gullich, a climber who had incredible skills.

0:28 Wolfgang Güllich was an absolutely outstanding climber! I live near his hometown and am a friend of his brother in law - who was together with Wolfgang and his wife in Hollywood in the early 90ies, when they trained together with Stallone for Cliffhanger. Güllich was pushed to his limits for Clifhanger, not only risking his life when climbing without gear in the Dolomites, but also had to wear a 'Stallone' mask, which reduced his sight and breath. Just to worthship - those climbing scenes are intense!

Wait a minute! 9:05 he's not holding himself up with either hand (presumably due to the harness being attached) so... Why the hell didn't he just reach down with his other hand to pull her up?!?

Love the concept. glad you made this. Your vertical limit one still takes 1st place. This one could have beat it but it lacked some of the other easy-to-make-fun-of scenes that are later in the movie. I'd love to see a second go at it.

@5:19 When she said "we're still on for dinner tonight, right?" it became obvious she was doomed. Probably the scariest falling scene of any movie.
1. She's obviously very inexperienced and scared, so why the hell was she climbing there? And of course she's young and beautiful.
2. When her gear breaks and she's dangling by a strap, it goes from fear to mortal terror, watching the rescue attempt slowly fail.
3. When she finally falls 4000 feet, that's about 15 seconds of falling in the certain knowledge that you will die horribly. SPLAT!

Went to see it, in '92, when it came out.... And yah, my climbing partner /friend and I laughed all th way thru it.

And, as everyone knows, it was Wolfgang Gullich who did th actual perspective shots that required a skilled climber. Th producers, in their infinite wisdom, decided Wolfgang - - - one of the top 5 male climbers in th world, at th time - - - - was too skinny and so they insisted he gain another 25+LB for filming..
When th film wz done, Wolfgang had to go and lose that xtra weight before regaining his abilities on the really demanding routes..

Important safety note here kids: should you ever be in a situation where you need to be rescued by a helicopter make sure you let the rescue hook touch the ground first. Never reach up and grab it or it could be the last thing you ever do. The electrical shock hazard is significant if not deadly. That and don’t get rescued by people named Gabe.

Good grief - After the first video, I was 'yeah, I'm gonna do K2 - it's easy - you can even run around and jump at 8000 metres'. Now that I know the truth about climbing gear mishaps, I'm going to give it a miss!
