The Night Lords stories are a great example of how you can create compelling, complex, fascinating characters without making them GOOD or even NICE in any way.

I think the last novel in particular was ADB trying to hammer home that yes, they have a very sparse sort of brotherhood going on and they have doubts and regrets and trauma to deal with... but none of that really excuses their actions anymore. They’re broken souls still trapped in a loop of alternately hating and wanting to make proud their father.

They’re amazing to read, a couple of them almost Byronic in their hubris and tragedy... but yeah, it shouldn’t be forgotten that they’re also evil bastards.

Konrad Kurze the fate of batman in a universe as f'd up as 40K. Defeating crime with fear and ultimately becoming dominated by fear himself.

Ive always loved Konrad Kurze. Such an interesting character. An evil Martyr. An Evil for good. Such a great concept. Its no surprise he fell to chaos but he had such strong sense of right. Its a tragedy I can really get behind.
