They actually are a professional "dramatics society". And "that guy", the director, is telling everybody that they are finished and did a great job. He's doing his job and he's doing it quite well. It's called direction with positive reinforcement.

Hasn't anybody tracked you down? How long have you been waiting? But seriously, do you know any musicians like these? Are you socially active in any music scene? Do you proactively seek gigs? A famous no-it-all once said 90% of success is showing up. Are you out there?

because those "terrible backup musicians" are either members of the band or good friends with the band and are willing to work long and often boring hours through tedious songwriting kinks and non paying gigs and aren't just doing it for a one off "fun" gig. If you are willing to do all those things, then you should start your own band. As a professional cellist it shouldn't be too hard to get something going???
