My father was a handy guy. He once took two 4' pieces of 1X2 beech.put one on top of. the other and made two brass fittings so that they stayed together but one slid back and forth. Then, he put precise markings on one o them. I believe it also had a thumbscrew. Using that ruler, he could measure many inside measurements. All he had to do is slide them apart until they touched the walls. He also used it as a straight ruler. The old guys came up with solutions that us modern guys go to the store and search for, and sometimes don not find.
