August 15th is an historic date for numerous reasons,... marking South Korea's national liberation, the end of World War Two,... and for India, the date of its own independence.
Shin Ye-eun has this report on the celebrations for India here in Korea.
August 15th is a special day for both South Korea and India.
Korea was liberated from imperial Japan on August 15th, 1945.
Two years later, on the same date, India gained its independence after some 200 years of rule by the British Empire.
"There are more than 10-thousand Indians living in South Korea, and even though they're far from home, they can celebrate too... here at the Indian Embassy's cultural center in Seoul.
But due to the pandemic, this year most events were held online."
The ceremony on Sunday... showed community members singing and dancing to Indian songs.
One person who joined is Professor Alok Kumar Roy.
For him, August 15th is extra special... because in 2011, he became the 1-hundred-thousandth person naturalized as a South Korean citizen.
"This is a day that is very important for any Indian. And especially for me, it's very important because I celebrate both Independence Days together on the same day."
Also joining were a few South Korean students majoring in Indian studies.
In view of their own country's history, they said they understand how important Independence Day is for India.
"The fact that they gained freedom on the same day as us helps me relate to India more."
.
South Korea and India established diplomatic relations at the ambassador level in 1973, and India's top envoy to Seoul says ties are the best they've ever been.
"I think they are at their best ever... And that's a great thing for an ambassador to be able to say because it's an indication of the kind of trust and intimacy that we have managed to develop over all these years."
Independence Day will continue to be an occasion for the Indian embassy to build ties between local Indian residents and their Korean neighbors.
"Congratulations to South Korea on its 76th Liberation Day. We can overcome any hardship if we work together."
Shin Ye-eun, Arirang News.
