Pikemen might lose in a scenario like this, but it's not something that happens often in a normal game realistically. I still consider pikemen the much better unit. The most difficult part of the game is to storm highly fortified castles and win the game after all, and that's where pikemen are much better than macemen since pikemen resist 17 crossbow shots, while macemen only take 3. They are also cheaper. And they actually have a hidden bonus damage against armored targets, they will deal much more damage to a swordsman or a knight than a maceman would do in a 1v1.

Well the pikes are only painted wood, how else would you explain the low damage and that the poleturner doesnt need iron for it
