Glad to see more awareness is being brought to the importance of training in the preppers community. No matter the weapon, anyone not training with a weapon or a knife is putting themselves at risk and making themselves a liability to others around them.

The most dangerous knife in the world is the one that you don't see coming.

I absolutely love the karambit. I have a collection. There's something almost unreal in using knife as pressure point controller like the great cats.
Absurdly effective in clinch and almost invisible during deployment.
Disadvantages?
Unfortunately, as Jason said: you need to train to use it....a lot, but get a training equivalent...just trust me and my surgeon on that.
Second issue is going against massive regulat combat knife. You lack range and the weight, but speed is always on your side...if you're good enough.
One more thing: Get only the ones with 2 cutting edges. Some countries' regulations limit the knife makers to provide karambits with only inner edge, and that literally limits your options by half.

P.S.: The intimidation factor is though the roof! There's some primeval fear of the giant claw deep in most people.

Stay safe out there....and get the blade....worst case scenario: trainings will make you do some regular cardio ;)

P.S.2:
Took me s while to figure the best way to carry it: i keep it in tight ugly but invincible kydex seethe, upside down (ring below the belt) on my right buttock. Normies usually can't see it, especially if it's covered by loose t-shirt or a hoodie in the way, only the ring stays expsed. Therefore, I can quickly put my finger trough the ring and deploy taking an immediate swing. 2 moves.

Knives are great for a bazillion mundane everyday things, absolute last ditch self defense tool and never ever for offensive use.

It’s important to reiterate this fact just in case there’s mall ninjas and/or completely clueless people watching.

I agree with what Jason said. I have one more point to keep in mind for a karambit. Something to remember about knives in self-defense: if you use it for a self-defense incident, it will be taken from you and presented as evidence should you be taken to trial (both criminal or civil). That means a jury is going to look at that knife, and that jury can't be counted on to look at it as simply a tool. The karambit is based on a tiger's claw, and the look of it is very predatory. This could create questions in a juror's mind as to what kind of person would carry such a weapon. This is why I don't carry them. I love karambits, but I won't carry one because I don't want to give more power to the people against me in court when I can be just as effective with a more mundane looking knife should the worst case scenario happen.

My scuba knife is not only fixed blade, but has a strong grip and easy to use.

Only got a karambit after being experienced with standard fixed blade knives and being able to flip and change my grip with those on the fly. When I got my first karambit I immediately started learning how to properly use it. It has a lot of advantages to a fixed blade ONLY if the person using it has learned those said advantages and can use them effectively. I would say grappling is definitely the largest advantage of the karambit fighting style

When you say not many people knows how to use karambit, actually that's a blessing in disguise. In the event your attacker possess your karambit, they won't know how to use it against you. Maybe you can ask them to give it back to you since it's useless for them anyway... ;)

The biggest factor for me is that the Karambit is WAY harder to keep sharp, compared with a traditional knife. I live in a large city and called every "knife sharpening service, " I could find and nobody was interested in sharpening a Karambit.

LOTAR made. They make some amazing blades. I agree, it's too specialized and requires a lot of training. I'd worry about those saw teeth getting caught in clothing and trapping my blade. I'd go with a CRKT Du Hoc, with single edge, non-serrated spine. You could strike [impact weapon] with the pommel or spine. Plus, if you like, the spine can be sharpened for a double edge, but once again, you better be darned good with it! I introduced my co-worker to Karambits and that's all he carries now. He trained under John Hackleman and also in Koei kan, and it fits well into his strike training. He runs a local trail, practices drawing/deploying on the move, and throws punches to cut encroaching branches. He's become scary good.

Jason I admit I was concerned I was going to have to disagree with you on this when I saw the title but even though the Karambit is my EDC I could not agree more. I have trained extensively with it and still do but I didn't understand the value in it when I first learned of it but I couldn't agree more.... for most people a straight blade is by far the better option but again I have a lot of experience with the Karambit so it works well for me and has some benefits

As someone who collects knives but is also trained in certain fighting styles i can confirm that karambits are more effective in certain fighting styles but the most effective one in my opinion and is the most common fighting style is boxing

I personally like the karambit but the only one worth using is a double edged one which happen to be rare apparently

Pocket karambit knife ones are good cutting tools for seatbelts and box cutting and of course general cutting tasks but limited in options in combat since it’s single edged and as a result you can’t stab with it

While a doubled edged depending on how sharp the angle is can stab

EDC I use a Gerber Combat folder. IF I choose to carry a fixed blade it is usually a cold steel Kobun Tanto. For Bushcraft I use either a ESSE #6 or a BLACKJACK HALO. Lots of other useful knives for various things, I use the correct tool for the job at hand. Knives are like AMMO< there is no ENOUGH.

Well put!
Very practical assessment.
I have a few, but always carry a traditional fixed blade, and back up folder.
Yes, Knife Junkie here as well...
Thank you for the video.

I would recommend a karambit to a boxer. It doesn't get in the way of their form, but also makes their pinches that much more intimidating.

Granted if you can box, chances are high that you shouldn't need a knife to defend yourself unless you can't get your hands on a firearm for self defense.
